Performance » The Musiclab Live - July 9th

The Musiclab Live - The White Lion Bengeo
Saturday 9th July

Following on from a busy weekend the previous weekend at The Hertford Music Festival

The Musiclab were back at The White Lion in Bengeo with another adult student pub gig. The first event of a double-header weekend (more on the junior gig at The Square on Sunday 10th July coming soon).

Kicking off proceedings was a last appearance by The Jimmy Savile Fan Club - sadly, tutor, Bob Malkowski has headed off to pastures new (or in fact pastures old) and the lack of "Rattle, rattle jewelry" and "now, then, now then, boys and girls" will be sorely missed. The guys did a fantastic send-off job with their six number set and we also witnessed a Musiclab debut gig for Calum. Well done guys!

Also making his live debut on drums, guitar tutor, Paolo kicked off the Labrats set with an up-tempo version of Chuck Berry's Too Much Monkey Business before Ollie, John D, Joe and Louise took to the kit as we ripped through a short set of 50s rock and roll tunes. Completed by Route 66 with Jane on drums (phew! slow down Jane!) and John B on vocals. To finish up the set, Bob showed us his drumming skills, drive and all-round excellence on Somethin' Else.

Next up were Steve and Gary. Missing their third member Dave (whose holidays are as regular as our gigs!), the boys wer undeterred and they continue to improve in confidence and ability with each performance.

Next up, The Labrats were back with some contemporary tunes with John B, Joe, John D and Jane doing some excellent work behind the kit. This section was finished off by Ollie's epic version of Musiclab favourite Wipeout.

Next we had a one of appearance from guitarist and singer Gie, backed up by Paolo on bass and Pete on drums for a four number set. Sadly Gie is heading back to his native Malaysia which is a shame because he showed what a welcome addition he was to the ranks of our adult students. We did get the offer of hosting one of our student nights at his bar on the Malaysian island of Langkawi!

Following on from Gie, our next student band took to the stage. Charlotte and Louise shared vocal duties and were very well supported by guitarists Michael and Paul with John B and John D sharing the duties on the drum stool. The guys have been gradually building their set up over the past few performances and now have a strong set of 10 songs. For me the highlight being Rollin' In The Deep with it's two-part harmonies and their arrangement of Whole Lotta Love, plus the original song, written by Charlotte - To Have and To Have Not. Excellent stuff!

We finished the night off, with the pub regulars up and dancing to another set of 50s Rock and Roll with The Labrats with Jane, Stu, Ollie, Louise, Pete and John B all taking truns at the kit. It was nice to see a couple of former drum students, Hazel and Terry come and do a guest number each and another highlight of the night being Pete's fine impersonation of Jerome Green / Machito on maracas.

We'd like to thank the guys at The White Lion for hosting this event and all our students and their friends and families who came down to support. Here's to the next one!
