About Us

About Us About Us About Us

Welcome to The Musiclab!

The Musiclab Academy is a progressive and innovative music school based in Hertfordshire. We have academies located in Welwyn Garden City and Hoddesdon and we teach drums, guitar, vocals, bass and keyboards to students of all ages and abilities.

Starting in September 2007 with just 15 drum students, The Musiclab has now grown to teach many pupils of all ages and abilities on guitar, drums, vocals, bass and keyboards.

We're really passionate about music and dedicated to providing quality, high-energy tuition within a safe, friendly and relaxed environment. Our tuition style is very much geared towards developing the student's creativity.

Classes are social and fun and designed to not only develop the student's skills on their chosen instrument, but to encourage interaction with other students and to build self-confidence. All students are encouraged to take part in our regular student gigs, where they get to showcase their skills to an enthusiastic audience of family and friends.

We believe the greatest motivation for progressing as a musician is very simple - enjoyment! If the student is enjoying their studies, then motivation will remain high. We also encourage our students to develop and maintain a professional attitude and approach to their studies to ensure that each individual has the best opportunity to achieve their full potential.

We specialise in group classes which offer great value for money and also provide several other key benefits. Our fully equipped music studios are suitable for anyone aged 5 or above.

  •     All ages and abilites catered for - we have lots of adult students too!
  •     Maximum of 4 students per class

Returning to On-Site Lessons

Firstly, we'd like to thank you all for your support over the past 6 months. We are looking forward to welcoming you all back to on-site lessons from September 1st and returning to something like “normal”. As I’m sure you are aware, we need to make a few adjustments to how we run the classes.

Students should wear facemasks when arriving for classes and when moving between rooms, in corridors and when visiting the toilets. Facemasks will not be mandatory for tutors or students within the classrooms. All of the teaching rooms are set up with social distancing measures in place, so the wearing of face masks during lessons will be optional for both tutors and students.
Class Changeover Times
We have adjusted the scheduling to allow extra time for class changeovers where necessary. We need to ensure that classes start on time and even more importantly end on time.

Drop off & Collection
We need to minimise the number of people in the reception and corridor areas. To help with this, please ensure that you arrive no earlier than two or three minutes before your class begins and that you are punctual when collecting your child. For the time being we request that parents should wait outside the building when collecting their children, the tutors have been instructed to escort the students to the door and a member of staff will wait in reception until you collect your child. Please do not arrive late to collect your child.

Hand Sanitiser
Hand sanitiser is available in reception, by the toilets and teaching room. We will encourage students to use it before and after lessons.

Equipment will be disinfected between lessons. To speed this process up, we request that all drum students bring their own drums sticks.
We would also prefer that students bring their own guitars for the time being. If your child does not have their own guitar, please let us know at the start of the lesson and we will provide one that will be cleaned between lessons.

Future Lockdowns
Should any form of lockdown occur during the Autumn Term, we will revert to the online teaching format. Hopefully this won’t be necessary, but we have contingency in place should this situation arise.

We look forward to seeing (and hearing) you all again very soon!

Reviews / Testimonials

"The Musiclab Show Team visited our school this week and they were phenomenal!  The guys were all so incredibly passionate about music and this shone out from them and was infectious!  From the very beginning of the session the children were engaged, enthralled and involved in the interactive performance.  The whole school, from Reception class through to Year 6 children all thoroughly enjoyed the session. They are still talking about it…!

The team provided a valuable testament to the value of music within the curriculum. I would like to thank you so much for inspiring our children with your fabulous perfomance."

Lorraine Brendish, Deputy Headteacher, Watchlytes School

"The Music Lab visited last week and treated our whole school (Nursery - Y6) to a half-hour performance of wonderful music. The band members are all very talented, enthusiastic and entertaining. They played continuously - a mixture of genres, from rock to reggae - involving the children (and staff) in singing and dancing, as well as educating us about the various music styles and instruments they were playing. We all left the hall invigorated and energised... and with the biggest smiles on our faces."

Juliet Keefe, Applecroft School

Group classes which offer great value and also provide several other benefits to the student. Within a group dynamic, students are able to "feed" off each other; they have the opportunity to develop communication skills, and appreciate their own and others' achievements.
Unfortunately, due to the nature of group lessons, we cannot refund missed lessons.
We try to organise our group lessons as much as possible by ability and age group.
In some cases we are able to provide one to one tuition, although availability is very limited. We highly recommend that students try our group sessions first!

I've been on about this for a while - asking if any students could come up with how many variations of single stroke roll are possible. I knew it would turn out to be a big number, but finally we have been lucky enough to find someone with the time and inclination to give it some proper thought! There are many different genres of music out there, just as there is guitarist and guitar. Most guitarists will try there hardest to produce their own sound using amps and effects to suite there music, but it all begins with choosing the right strings.

Tuition Terms & Conditions

The Musiclab Terms & Conditions

Term & Conditions for The Musiclab Pupils and Parents of.

1) Invoicing and payment of lesson fees

The Musiclab teaching terms generally coincide with the local school terms. Lessons are to be paid before the start of each term, or monthly by standing order.

Renewal letters / Invoices will be sent to you via the email address given to us when you enrol. Please ensure this email address is kept up to date and inform us of any changes in contact details and email addresses.

You will receive your renewal letter / invoice two weeks before the end of term, for the following term. The invoice will show deadlines of payment and options of payment methods.

These renewal letter / invoices will continue to be sent to you unless you leave the school. Each invoice will be for the following full term. We do not charge for Half-term holidays or Bank Holidays, although supplementary lessons are sometimes available.

All tuition fees that are paid by the last day of term, will be subject to a discount.

Payment can be made online, via credit or debit card, or in person, by cheque or cash.

2) Lesson Alterations

We aim to ensure that lessons are as consistent as possible; however there will be times where alterations are necessary:

  • Teacher's absence: In the event of a teacher being absent, we will organise for an alternative, teacher to cover. If this is not possible, the teacher will endeavour to make this lesson up before the end of term. This often takes place during half-term.
  • Change in Pupil Ability: We constantly monitor classes to ensure that progress is being made and that classes are suitable for all who attend. Naturally, pupils within a class may progress quicker than others, resulting in the need to re-structure a group. Again, this will only occur to ensure the progress and enjoyment of lessons for each individual pupil.
  • Weather Conditions: If weather such as snow is forecast, we will continue to run lessons unless we feel it is dangerous to our teachers and pupils. If we have to cancel a lesson due to weather conditions, we will notify you at the earliest opportunity and endeavour to make the lesson up as soon as possible. If a pupil does not attend a lesson, or the rescheduled lesson provided due to weather conditions, but their particular teacher is on site teaching, the lesson will be forfeited.

3) Lesson Cancellations
On rare occasions we may need to cancel a lesson. On these occasions lessons will be rescheduled. If we are unable to reschedule a lesson, or you are unable to attend the rescheduled lesson in holiday time, the lesson fee will be credited against the following terms fees.

We will always notify you of a cancelled lesson via phone or email, which will be sent to a designated parent/guardian with the contact details that have been given to us.

If a pupil misses a lesson which is not as a consequence of a Musiclab cancellation, the lesson is forfeited.

If you are aware that you / your child will miss certain dates during an upcoming term, we will not charge for these lessons provided you inform us of the dates prior to making your payment / deposit payment for that term.

4) Leaving the school
If you wish to withdraw from lessons, please remember that you can do so only at the end of a term, and that fees cannot be refunded once you have committed to a full term.

Notice must be made to our admin office  via email

If you wish to cancel lessons before the end of term, you will forfeit your lessons.

5) Safety of Pupils
The school and the teachers only accept responsibility for the safety of pupils once they are under the teachers' supervision, within the class room. We recommend that parents should escort children to the lesson, and pick them up at the end of the lesson.

6) Collection of pupils
There must be a designated parent/guardian assigned to the collection of each pupil who is under 16, as well as a secondary parent/guardian. Should, for any reason, you need to make arrangements for an alternative person to collect your child, you must inform the staff so that we can ensure the safety of your child.

If you are running late, it is imperative that you contact the staff, so that we can ensure the safety of your child and continue supervision until you arrive. However, we do ask that every effort must be made on your behalf to collect your child on time.

8) Variation to the Terms and Conditions

These terms and conditions may be updated on occasion. You will be notified of any changes in advance via email. If you do not agree with changes to these terms and conditions, you are entitled to terminate the lessons by providing us with half a terms notice (fee payable), in writing. Terms and Conditions are published on our website.
